Large CAD Net Shots In CFTC Positioning Ahead Of BoC Decision

  • USDCAD sits almost unchanged on the day, likely with an eye on Wednesday’s BoC decision.
  • In doing so it surprisingly fades the current 1.3% rally in e-mini S&P and CAD underperforms other risk-sensitive majors.
  • Updated late Friday, CFTC positioning from last Tue (i.e. capturing the key final inputs from the BoC surveys and CPI inflation) showed only a small reduction of CAD net shorts from -23% to -20.6%, hovering at levels last seen in Oct’21 and in the past couple years not held at for more than a few weeks.
  • If indicative of broader positioning, it could set a backdrop for some short-term CAD outperformance but much will likely still depend on risk sentiment and US equities in particular despite today's fading.
