Latvian Government abandons Skulte LNG plan: Argus

LNG

The Latvian government has abandoned plans to build an LNG terminal at the Port of Skulte, according to Argus, citing the Latvian Energy Minister.

  • "Our previous discussions on the Skulte terminal or the necessity to build it should be left in the past," Latvian Energy Minister Raimonds Cudars said.
  • Skulte has been deemed unnecessary because existing infrastructure in the region is sufficient, while Latvia also has joint use of the Paldiski LNG terminal in Estonia, following an agreement in May.
  • The Minister said that the existing Incukalns storage facility is well filled, and its capacity fully booked for 2023 providing energy security for the whole Baltic region.
  • The project had been due to begin in Q2, but the Latvian Government rejected the developer’s terms in February, stalling the project.
