Lavrov: Hope Withdrawal Does Not Trigger NATO Aggression In Donbas

US-RUSSIA

Lavrov: "I hope that the history of the OSCE mission in Kosovo, where its withdrawal was used as a trigger for NATO aggression, will not be repeated in the Donbass." There is some unverified speculation that accusations of aggression from Ukrainian or NATO forces during a Russian troop drawdown from the Ukrainan border region could be used as a precursor to 'retaliate' in the region in defence of ethnic Russian minorities.

Lavrov states that Russia has 'nothing to hide' on the matter.
  • Lavrov also states that if Ukraine 'ditches its plans on NATO accession' then it would 'prompt a sigh or relief'.
  • Comments come as the Russian State Duma approves a resolution asking President Vladimir Putin to recognise the breakaway Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas as sovereign states.
