Lavrov Talks Down Relevance of May 9th

RUSSIA
  • On the topic of sanctions, the German foreign minister Baerbock stated that sanctions against Russia can only begin to be lifted once Russian troops are clear of Ukrainian territory – including the annexed region of Crimea.
  • Reports of attacks persist in the east, with Izyum a new front for the conflict, although exchanges of fire remain very common across the Donetsk region.
  • German Chancellor Scholz is to extend a special invitation to the Indian Prime Minister to attend the G7 summit in June in an effort to deter a further strengthening of the relationship between Russia and India.
  • Russia’s foreign minister Lavrov talked down any speculation that Moscow were looking to secure victory by the May 9th holiday, stating that Russia’s armed forces will not artificially adjust their actions to suit any particular date. In the interview with Mediaset, Lavrov added that the pace of the operation depends on minimising risks to civilians and Russian military personnel.
