LDP Mulling Leadership Election Sep 15, Aso Not Running: Kyodo

Kyodo reporting that senior figures in Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party are considering September 15 as the potential date for a leadership contest, following the announcement of the resignation of Prime Minister and LDP head Shinzo Abe earlier today.

  • Kyodo is also reporting that Deputy PM and Finance Minister Taro Aso, who has previously served as PM, is not going to run for the premiership this time around. The potential for a second term in office for Aso would likely have been as a caretaker PM given his advanced age.
