Leader Of Scottish Conservatives Jackson Carlaw Resigns

UK

Leader of the Scottish Conservatives Jackson Carlaw MSP has resigned, issuing the following statement: "In the last few weeks, I have reached a simple if painful conclusion - that I am not, in the present circumstances, the person best placed to lead that case over these next vital months in Scottish politics prior to the Holyrood elections."

  • Carlaw has lead the Conservatives in Scotland since the resignation of Ruth Davidson in August 2019.
  • Davidson was a well-known political figure and had high personal approval ratings across the UK. Carlaw has struggled to make the same impact.
  • According to opinion polls the Conservatives remain in second place, well behind the SNP, but with Labour narrowing the gap to 3rd place.
  • Pro-Union Conservatives also concerned about a series of polls showing majority support for Scottish independence.
