Leftist Jiles Carries Highest Approval Ratings As Focus Turns To Election

CHILE

While the Chilean general election does not take place until November, focus is turning to the candidates set to challenge for the presidency. The latest opinion poll from Cadem/Plaza Publica shows approval ratings for prominent public figures, with Deputy from the left-wing Humanist Party and journalist Pamela Jiles recording the highest approval ratings of any politician at 58%.

  • Narrowly behind Jiles is Joaquin Lavin from the conservative Independent Democratic Union (UDI) with 55%. Lavin has run for the Chilean presidency twice in 1999 and 2005, and has served in several ministerial posts under incumbent President Sebastian Pinera. Evelyn Matthei, another former minister from the UDI, trails Lavin with 50% approval.
  • The most popular public figure in Chile is not a politician but a 34-year old doctor, the head of the Medical College of Chile Izkia Siches. Siches' approval rating stands at 64%.
