POWER

Lithuania has approved amendments enabling Litgrid to purchase balancing services from Energy Cells 200MW BESS unit, a key step in preparing for the Baltic States' synchronization with continental Europe on 9 February 2025, the government said.

  • Energy Cells will contribute 40 MW of balancing capacity temporarily while maintaining its primary role of providing isolated working reserve services.
  • The Baltic States will require approximately 1.5GW of balancing capacity in 2025, with Energy Cells contributing to 30% of the demand, while 70% will be market-sourced.
  • Currently, 37 BESS projects with a combined capacity of 1.05GW (2.710GWh) are being developed in Lithuania, expected to reduce reliance on Energy Cells by 2026.
