LNG: Argentina May Cut LNG Imports from 2025: Platts
LNG
Argentina will likely import 26-32 LNG cargoes in 2025, in-line with the 30 shipments this year, a source close to Enarsa told Platts.
- Enarsa has been gradually reducing its LNG buying, which peaked at 104 cargoes in 2014. It has also cut its FSRUs from two to one.
- The scaling back is the result of rising local production driven by the development of the Vaca Muerta shale play.
- Argentina’s gas production surpassed 150 mcm/d this year, compared to 113.7 mcm/d in 2014.
- Argentina’s average gas demand around 140 mcm/d.
- The 2024 increase in LNG buying came because winter arrived earlier than expected in May and was the coldest since 1960.
- If next winter is milder, buying could even fall below the estimated 26-32 cargoes.
- Moreover, a surge in production from Vaca Muerta could cut LNG cargo buying to just 20.
