LNG Futures H1 Traded Volumes Soar on Steadier JKM: Platts

LNG

LNG futures traded volumes in H1 2024 rose year-on-year due to increased trading activity in the cargo market and stabilising APAC spot LNG prices, Platts said.

  • Total traded volumes recorded for JKM LNG futures and JKM LNG balance-month-next-day futures in Jan-June was 495,581 lots, up 71.55% from 288,888 lots over the H1 2023.
  • The increase in trading volumes was due to more stability in Asian LNG prices.
  • APAC LNG prices in H1 2024 have traded in a narrower range compared to 2023. Prices ranged from $8-$13/MMBtu in H1 2024, narrower than the $8-$23/MMBtu in H1 2023.
  • APAC spot LNG prices trended higher in June as sentiment turned bullish on forecasts of above-average summer temperatures.
  • JKM averaged $12.577/MMBtu in June, compared to $11.230/MMBtu in May.
  • The Asian market remained well supplied, partly due to an open arbitrage with the US in June.
