LNG: Sanctioned LNG Tankers from Arctic LNG 2 Wait in Sea of Japan

LNG

Sanctioned LNG tankers Nova Energy, Pioneer and Asya Energy carrying Russian LNG remain in the Sea of Japan awaiting buyers with importers wary of US restrictions, according to Bloomberg.

  • The vessels all loaded at the Arctic LNG 2 facility in Russia which began exports in early-August but has been targeted by US sanctions.
  • Asya Energy has been in the sea between Japan and Russia since early-October.
  • No confirmed delivery of any of the cargos from Arctic LNG 2 has yet taken place.
  • “We are paying very, very close attention to where sanctioned Russian cargoes are heading,” said Geoffrey Pyatt at the US State Department. “We are coordinating very closely with our partners across the G7 and ports that are potential destinations for those cargoes.”
  • Failure to market Russian LNG cargos from Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 already on the water in the Asia-Pacific region would represent a major setback and would effectively put Russia’s LNG expansion program on hold, according to OIES.
