Load-Shedding Worsens as Reports Show Extent of Cash Crunch at Eskom

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Planned load-shedding has been upgraded, with power cuts now amounting to 4,000MW from 10am today after several units were tripped during maintenance. 4,000MW equates to stage 4 load-shedding, and is to persist until 5am on September 15th.
  • Fin24 write that Eskom may require more state funds going forward, with the utility spending nearly $500mln over the past six months solely on burning diesel to supplement rolling blackouts. This is well over what Eskom themselves had estimated their full-year diesel cost would amount to. This leaves R350mln from the original budget.
  • The continued and persistent financial troubles at Eskom will likely continue to take focus ahead of October’s medium-term budget confirmed yesterday to be held on the 26th.
