Local Elections Today, PM's Social Democrats Set To Hold Copenhagen

DENMARK

Denmark holds its local and municipal elections today, with 98 municipal councils and five regional councils up for grabs. The most high-profile contest is in the capital, Copenhagen, where Sophie Haestorp Andersen seeks to succeed her Social Democrat colleage Lars Weiss in the mayoralty.

  • Since the creation of the mayor's office in 1938, there have only been Social Democratic mayors of the Danish capital.
  • The eco-socialist Left-Green Alliance are the main challengers to the Social Democrats in Copenhagen, and their candidate Line Barford is expected to offer some resistance to an Andersen walkover.
  • Opinion polls show PM Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats far ahead of both the main centre-right opposition parties. Anything other than comfortable wins in areas not historically dominated by the centre right (southern Denmark and the North Sea coast of Jutland) would be seen as something of a let-down for the governing party.
