Local News: Government Suspend AZN Vaccination For Pregnant Women

  • Senator Roberto Rocha (Brazilian Social Democracy Party) filed on Tuesday a request to launch an investigative parliamentary committee (CPI) to confirm the alleged existence of a secret budget of R$3 billion. The funds were allegedly offered to lawmakers for the purchase of machinery, such as tractors, in exchange for support for President Jair Bolsonaro in Congress, O Estado de S. Paulo reported. The senator must gather 27 signatures of support to start the investigation. Mr. Bolsonaro denies any vote buying. (Valor Econômico)
  • Brazil's federal government on Tuesday nationally suspended the vaccination of pregnant women with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 shot, after an expectant mother in Rio de Janeiro died from a stroke possibly related to the inoculation.
  • Brazil's Health Ministry on Tuesday announced it had signed a deal for Pfizer to deliver an additional 100 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, doubling the number of shots from the company.
    • The additional shots will be delivered between September and December, the Health Ministry said in a statement.
