Local Press Takes Notably Pessimistic View on ’24 Load-Shedding Prospects

  • Daily Maverick writes that the resumption of load-shedding in the new year spells for a dark year ahead. The piece cites energy analysts as saying that the resumption of powercuts came as a surprise to many, with unplanned outages of 24,000MW out of service being a record for South Africa.
  • They conclude that rolling blackouts would already be at much higher stages had it not been for typically lower demand across December and early January.
  • Whole economy PMI for December came in at 49.0 from a prior reading of 50.0. Data shows new orders falling to the lowest level since January of last year at 47.1 (Prev. 48.5).
