Low Rhine Levels Limit Diesel, Heating Oil Barges

Diesel and heating oil volumes that can be moved inland by barge on the Rhine have been limited by low water levels according to Riverlake Barging.

  • Barges carrying fuel from the Rotterdam area beyond the Kaub chokepoint can currently only carry just over 1,200tons of fuel, down from 2,000 tons a week ago.
  • This has pushed up prices of moving heating oil to Karlsruhe, on the Upper Rhine in Germany.
  • Bayernoil’s Vohburg refinery took a big diesel-making machine known as a hydrocracker out of service this week, according to Wood Mackenzie. The complex has suffered disruption to wholesale diesel supplies this month.
  • Precipitation in the closest large city of Frankfurt has been revised up and is forecast to reach 5.8mm on Friday, the latest ECMWF showed.
