Lower Hydro Output Could Boost Italy's Gas Demand in 2024

NATURAL GAS

Gas demand for power generation in Italy could increase in 2024 due to lower hydropower output according to Montel sources.

  • Reservoirs water reserves fell by 44% in December compared with the 2011-2022 average.
  • “Peak snow water resources in the early spring” could drop by 60% if current mild temperatures continue in the coming months, said Francesco Avanzi at Cima Foundation.
  • Low snowpack reserves and a drop in river water levels also raises the risk of unplanned outages from CCGT cooling systems located along the basin of the river Po, Avanzi said.
  • Solar power and gas for power generation would have to increase to cover any hydropower output deficit in Q2 and Q3 according to Nicola Armaroli at Italy’s National Research Council.
  • A very dry 2022 reduced Italian hydropower generation by as much as 37.7%, according to TSO Terna’s data.
