Luxon Succeeds Collins As Head Of Opposition National Party

NEW ZEALAND

Freshman MP Christopher Luxon has been selected as the new leader of the main opposition centre-right National Party. Luxon was elected unopposed after a back-room deal arranged with challenger Simon Bridges saw him run unopposed. The new Nationals leader faces a major uphill challenge in regaining the party's support, which has ebbed away ever since centre-left Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern became prime minister in 2017.

  • Luxon, the former CEO of flag-carrier Air New Zealand, has only been an MP since the 2020 general election. His elevation to Nationals leader makes him the most inexperienced politician to take on a major party leadership in New Zealand history.
  • While the next general election is not due until 2023, Luxon has his work cut out for him getting his party in a position to challenge Labour. The Nationals have been beset by internal crises, with four leaders in the past 18 months.
  • They trail Ardern's party by around 13-15% in opinion polls on 23-28%, with a sizeable propotion of the Nationals' historic support base opting for the libertarian ACT party - polling at historic highs of around 16%.
