Macau Gaming Rev Misses Target, Visitors Remain Below Pre-Covid

CREDIT UPDATE

In July, Macau's gaming revenue rose by 12% y/y falling short of the median analyst estimate of a 14% increase. This revenue level represents 76% of the pre-pandemic amount from 2019.

  • Beijing’s crackdown on illegal money exchange activities and cross-border gambling has dented sentiment among players.
  • Macau reported 2.55m visitor arrivals in June, which is about 82% of the pre-pandemic level. This is likely due to China easing international travel restrictions and visa regulations encouraging for Chinese citizens, prompting them to travel international rather than locally to Macau.
  • The BBG Macau Gaming Index is down 29% from the May highs.
  • Bonds were little changed overnight, although trades near widest levels to underlying benchmarks since March to be one of the worst performing sectors recently.
