Macron Delivers Address @ 2000CET Following Loss Of Parl't Majority

FRANCE

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deliver a televised address later today at 2000CET (1400ET, 1900BST). This will be his first national speech since his centrist Ensemble alliance lost its majority in the National Assembly in the second-round parliamentary election on 19 June.

  • Macron remains in a difficult position in trying to secure a majority after the president of the centre-right Les Republicains refused to go into coalition with Ensemble.
  • Some other potential solutions would be gaining the support of the centre-left Socialist Party and the environmentalist Greens. However, these both ran as part of the leftist anti-Macron NUPES alliance, and therefore may not be inclined to prop up Macron's alliance.
  • Ensemble could end up reliant on gaining support from individual deputies or parties on a vote-by-vote basis. This would risk a very slow and laborious legislative process, limiting the gov'ts ability to enact legislation.
  • There is the potential for fresh elections later in the year if no workable majority can be created and the legislature ends up in gridlock. Given Ensemble's poor performance combined with gains for the far-left and far-right a snap vote could backfire, risking a period of 'cohabitation' should another party emerge as larger than Ensemble.
