French President Emmanuel Macron told a meeting of party leaders at the Elysée Palace, which excluded the far-right National Rally (RN) and far-left France Unbowed (LFI), that he intends to name a new Prime Minister "within 48 hours" and has "no plans to dissolve the national assembly" during the remaining 30 months of his mandate, per aides cited by Reuters and Bloomberg.
- MNI noted in a bullet earlier today that leaders of the other parties in the leftist New Popular Front (NFP) alliance have signalled their willingness to go into government, but with stringent conditions. One of these is likely to be the new PM coming from the left. See: FRANCE: Draft 'Special Law' On Budget To Be Examined In Parl't 16 Dec
- Reuters reports that the aides said Macron is, "in favour of reaching an agreement under which political parties would not censure the government."
- Politico reports that several candidates have been floated in French media to replace Michel Barnier, whose government lost a no-confidence vote last week, "among them former Justice Minister François Bayrou and current Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu."
