Maduro Opens Door for Direct Talks with the U.S.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said on Monday he had accepted a proposal to restart direct talks with the U.S.

  • "After thinking about it, I have accepted and next Wednesday the talks will restart with the United States government to comply with the agreements signed in Qatar and to reestablish the terms of the dialogue with respect," Maduro said on national television.
  • The talks started around two years ago under the Biden Administration, but after U.S. oil sanctions were reimposed in April, Maduro's government accused the United States of violating the Qatar accord.
  • Venezuela made little attempt to organize free and fair elections which were required to maintain the eased oil sanctions. The U.S. reintroduced them April 18 though exports from the country remain firm.
