Magashule Changes Tact Ahead of Integrity Commission

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Key shift in tone from ANC SG Magashule ahead of Integrity Commission tomorrow could indicate a number of possibilities.
  • Prior to yesterday, he said he would not step aside, but shifted his rhetoric - saying it was up to the NEC.

1) Could mean he is genuinely concerned and bowing to pressure to comply and step aside due to the damning nature of evidence against him and understand his fate is sealed.
2) he has managed to do a deal internally with the ANC to face the IC, get a slap on the wrist, and continue his duties.

  • Humble tone plays into victim demeanour and agreeing to comply with party decisions which may have already agreed to eventually let him stay in office.
  • Corruption proceedings set for Feb 2021
  • Many believe evidence to be iron-clad
  • but whether he steps aside from his role as SG in Jan in a symbolic victory for Ramaphosa is a different story
