HUNGARY: Magyar Holds Speech as Tisza Party Remains Ahead in Polls

  • Peter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, said on Saturday he would focus on tackling a cost-of-living crisis and reviving the country's flagging economy if he wins an election due in early 2026, Reuters report. Magyar said he would boost the economy by, for example, unblocking EU that are currently frozen. He also vowed to eliminate corruption and to make economic policy predictable.
  • According to the latest poll conducted by the Publicus Institute think-tank between Jan 20-29, Tisza had 42% support among decided voters while Fidesz had 37%. Prime Minister Orban delivers his State of Nation address on Saturday.
  • Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in an interview late Friday that a US-Russia agreement was needed for the Ukraine war to end, MTI report. Szijjarto said he expected that Trump would be able to reach a deal with Putin and no matter what the European leaders and Brussels bureaucrats do, the agreement will be signed.
  • Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is set to visit Budapest today, where, according to Bloomberg, his ally Orban will present him with an award. There are no major data releases scheduled for today.
