MALAYSIA: Former PM Muhyiddin Charged With Six Counts Of Corruption & Money Laundering

ASIA

Former Malaysian Prime Minister and leader of the main opposition Bersatu party Muhyiddin Yassin has been charged with four counts of corruption involving MYR232mn and two counts of money laundering amounting to MYR195mn at the Session Court this morning.

  • Muhyiddin was released from detention after paying a bail of MYR2mn and surrendering his passport. If convicted, the former Premier could face up to 20 years in prison for corruption charges and up to 15 years jail time for money laundering charges, in addition to hefty fines.
  • Bersatu officials have closed ranks, with the party's deputy leader Ahmad Faizal noting that Bersatu "members are now very angry," which has brought them together. He announced that the Perikatan Nasional bloc will hold a rally in support of Muhyiddin over the weekend, while the leader will address his party on Sunday.
  • The court cases may upend Perikatan Nasional's ambition to pick up battles with the ruling coalition in six state elections this year. Muhyiddin remains a key political opponent of incumbent Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after both initially claimed to have the numbers to form the new government after the last general election.
