Malaysia PM Anwar's PKR Denies Reports Suggesting Party Decided To Delay Internal Election

ASIA

Fuziah Salleh, the newly appointed Secretary General of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's People's Justice Party (PKR), denied rumours suggesting that the party decided to postpone its internal polls until after the next general election. As a reminder, the terms of PKR executives expire next year, while Malaysia is not due to hold the 16th general election (locally referred to as GE16) until 2028.

  • That being said, Fuziah did not categorically rule out a postponement, noting that such a discussion was held but has not been conclusive yet and "further engagement at all levels of party leadership is necessary before any decision is made."
  • Free Malaysia Today reminds that the PKR delayed its internal election that was due in 2021 by 18 months until July 2022, "citing a provision in the party constitution that allowed for such a delay."
  • Fuziah took over as PKR Secretary General upon the resignation of Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who decided to focus on his duties as Home Affairs Minister and Secretary General of the Pakatan Harapan bloc.
