Malaysian Parliament Reconvenes, Lawmakers To Discuss Rising Cost Of Living

Malaysian parliament reconvenes for three weeks from today and are set to debate several closely watched items:

  • On today's agenda are issues related to the rising cost of living. They will be raised by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim during the Q&A session with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri.
  • The main focus will be on the anti-party hopping law, expected to be tabled as soon as today. The proposed bill to amend the Federal Constitution is a key element of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and the opposition.
  • Remaining key legislative proposals to be discussed in the coming days include the Independent Police Complaints Commission Bill, Malaysian Border Security Agency Bill, Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill and Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Bill.
  • The latter bill would tighten disciplinary measures against medical workers who fail to report confirmed or suspected cases of infectious disease and steps up enforcement of any regulations imposed by the government to contain an outbreak of an infectious disease.
