The jury in former President Donald Trump's Manhattan hush money trial has returned to a second day of deliberations after hearing readbacks on portions of witness testimony, including from Trump's former fixer Michael Cohen and former publisher of The National Enquirer, David Pecker.
- Some legal experts have predicted a jury verdict before the weekend but the NYT cautions: "There’s no way to know when a verdict might come:After closing arguments that lasted until 8 p.m. Tuesday, jurors had about four and a half hours of deliberations on Wednesday. It’s common to wait days, or even weeks, for a verdict."
- Trump faces four possible verdicts from the jury: Guilty on all counts, a split decision, a hung jury, or acquittal with the prevailing view of legal experts pointing towards a high probability that Trump will be found guilty on at least some of the charges.
- If a guilty verdict is forthcoming, it is unlikely to significantly derail Trump's presidential campaign. Trump's defence would certainly appeal any guilty verdict - likely to keep him out of prison until after Election Day - allowing Trump to esclate rhetoric about the charges being politically motivated.
- Democratic strategist Mark Mellman said: “A conviction in this case is unlikely to play a significant role [in the election]. It’s possible that the polls will flutter and then return to where they were. And it’s possible that there won’t be a flutter.”
- Republican pollster Whit Ayres said: “The most likely impact of a guilty verdict is negligible."
