Manufacturing Sales The Latest To Disappoint In June Flash

  • Manufacturing sales fell -2.2% M/M in June according to the flash release, more than unwinding the limited upside from the May print released on Jul 14 with +1.2% M/M (cons 0.8) after a downward revised -0.1%.
  • “The largest declines were in the petroleum and coal product, chemical, and food product industries.” The weighted response rate of 66.9%.
  • The flash is only in values terms but it leaves sales at -3.2% annualized in Q2 after +4.4% in Q1.
  • It paints a similar picture to yesterday’s wholesale trade falling -4.4% in its June flash after +3.5%. When combined with the subdued retail sales flash of 0.0% M/M, it suggests at best no growth across a variety of nominal sales in June.
