Markets Closed, First Constitutional Assembly Session Due July 4

  • **Chilean markets will be closed today for a national holiday approved by congress last week.
  • The Chilean peso slumped 1.4% on Friday, leading losses across Latin America. USDCLP upside has accelerated and price is now above key resistance at 737.49 and targets the year's highs just above 750. Additionally, concerns over Chinese caps on prices extended the downward pressure on copper as the red metal headed for its worst week since March 2020.
  • Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said on Sunday the assembly to draft a new constitution, replacing the one inherited from the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, will hold its first session on July 4.
    • "This convention undoubtedly represents a great opportunity to achieve a new constitution that will be recognized and respected by all Chileans under a framework of unity and stability toward the future for our democracy," Pinera said.
