MNI Gilt Week Ahead: Pill the Highlight

  • For us the highlight of the week will be a speech by BOE Chief Economist Huw Pill on Tuesday entitled “Inflation persistence & monetary policy” with the text and slides due for release tomorrow at 15:30BST (and the event itself starting at 17:30BST). Pill’s last major speech on 2 March gave little away about his voting intentions for the March MPC meeting, and we would expect him to remain non-committal in this speech too.
  • We will also hear twice from Silvana Tenreyro – on both Tuesday and Wednesday – but we would not expect her comments to be market moving. She is one of the two doves on the MPC and far away from the central viewpoint and she also only have two more MPC meetings (May and June) before her term on the Committee ends.
  • It’s a relatively light week for domestic events in the UK as the new fiscal year gets underway. We have already received the final print of the manufacturing PMI (which saw little change to the flash print) and we are due to receive the services print on Wednesday.
