Martin: No Need For UK To Trigger Art.16 Of NI Protocol

IRELAND

Paul Cunningham at RTE tweets comments from Taoiseach (PM) Micheal Martin regarding the Northern Ireland protocol: "Taoiseach Micheal Martin calls for "dialogue and engagement" between the EU + UK to resolve NI Protocol issues. He told the Dail: "I don't think there is a need to trigger Article 16. and I think it would be wrong to so. Trade would be disrupted ultimately". He added: "Access to the Single Market is important to people in Northern Ireland. Any triggering of Article 16 could ultimately jeopardise, in the shorter term, that access."

  • "The Labour leader Alan Kelly said "the last thing collectively we all need" is for a trade war to erupt between the EU and the UK. And he inquired about what contacts the Irish govt was engaging in with both sides. The Taoiseach replied: "There are Ministerial engagements with our counterparts that are happening... to point up the primacy of continuing dialogue between the EU and the UK."
  • "Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald said that "vast vast majority of people from all communities" in Northern Ireland support the Protocol, and do not want to see the triggering of Article 16."
