Mayor Of Johannesburg, Geoff Makhubo, Dies With COVID-19 Aged 53

Media outlets in South Africa are confirming that the Mayor of Johannesburg - Geoff Makhubo - has died aged 53. Makhubo was hospitalised with COVID-19 on 3 July.

  • South Africa is dealing with an escalating third wave of COVID-19 infections at present, and unlike most developed markets, it has not been able to secure significant numbers of vaccine doses to protect its population. South Africa's vaccination rate stands at around 6 people vaccinated per 100 population, well below the 50-60 people per hundred vaccinated in most developed markets.
  • The current level 4 lockdown, including a ban on alcohol sales, is likely to be extended from its current end-date of 11 July given the escalating number of cases and fatalities due to the virus.
