MBA Mortgage Rate Exceeds 6.5%, Aug'08 High

US
  • The average 30Y MBA mortgage rate jumped 27bp to 6.52% last week, for a new high since Aug’08 and not that far off 2006 highs of 6.86%, following recent moves higher in Treasury yields.
  • Recent increases have led the more-timely Freddie Mac 30Y rate, whilst composite mortgage applications resume their downtrend after a surprise pick-up the prior week, likely further intensifying the decline in home sales despite yesterday's surprise surge in new home sales back in August.
