McCarthy Urges House Republicans To Support CR To Avoid Govt Shutdown

US

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has urged Republican House Reps to support a GOP short-term Continuing Resolution to avert a government shutdown on Sunday.

  • McCarthy said, per Chad Pergram at Fox News, that, in the event of a shutdown, "I don't think anybody's stronger. I don't think the country is better if you have a shutdown."
  • McCarthy suggests that measures to secure the border may be lost if House conservatives fail to support the House CR: "This is a place where we can get a short term stopgap if we get something on the border, something that we can. Start to secure them. But that would be different than the bill that you have even last night."
  • McCarthy: "I'm talking to Senate Democrats because even this morning they want to do something on the border... To me that is the place where I think we can get a stopgap bill."
  • The Senate has just voted to clear the first procedural hurdle on their CR. Without unanimous consent, unlikely due to opposition from Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), a vote on the bill is expected on Sunday.
