McCarthy Won't Bring Senate Continuing Resolution For House Vote

US

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has told a Republican conference meeting that the Senate Continuing Resolution, unveiled yesterday to fund the government for 45 days and avert a shutdown on Sunday, will not be brought up for a vote on the House floor.

  • McCarthy said: "I don’t see the support in the House [for the Senate bill]."
  • McCarthy's comments are his most explicit that he will continuing pursing a strategy of linking funding the government with border security - a strategy which he believes can credible deflect blame for a shutdown onto Democrats and the White House.
  • McCarthy said: "Biden is 'most vulnerable' on the border. 11,000 ppl came through yesterday," according to Jake Sherman at Punchbowl.
  • Erik Wasson at Bloomberg: "House GOP now mulling 1 week stopgap attached to border bill to get to conference with Senate says @RepRaphNorman."
  • There is still a lack of clarity over whether conservative holdouts will even back a highly partisan short-term measures.
  • Sherman: "[Rep] Brian Mast [R-FL] asked if the no-CR crew would be ok with short-term CRs lasting a few days. [Rep] Dan bishop [R-NC]... said no."
