Memorial Day Road Travel Forecast to Increase vs 2021

ENERGY

AAA predicts 39.2 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend. This is an increase of 8.3% over 2021, bringing travel volumes almost in line with those in 2017.

  • Memorial Day weekend kicks off the US summer driving season when US gasoline demand is at its highest. A strong start to demand from this weekend typically correlates to higher demand through the summer according to AAA.
  • If higher US gasoline demand materializes, it comes against a backdrop of weak domestic product inventories, particularly on the US East Coast.
