MI Inflation Gauge Moderates But Underlying Pressures Elevated

AUSTRALIA DATA

The Melbourne Institute’s inflation gauge for June moderated to 5.7% y/y from 5.9%. It is now down from the peak of 6.4% in January and close to the May CPI result. The trimmed mean eased to 6% from 6.1%, still elevated but down slightly from February’s peak of 6.3%. Excluding volatile items was even higher at 6.5% but down from 6.6%. The data give the same signal as the CPI, inflation is easing but the bulk of the work is being done by volatile items such as fuel. Underlying price pressures remain high and a concern. The MI measure didn’t go as high as the CPI and is now coming down more gently.
