MIDEAST: New Hezbollah Ldr Qassem To Deliver First Speech @ 1500 Local Time

MIDEAST

At 1500 local time (0900ET, 1300GMT, 1400CET) Hezbollah's Secretary General Naim Qassem will deliver his first speech since being confirmed as the group's new leader on Tuesday. The tone and content of Qassem's speech will be closely scrutinised amid speculation that Israel could seek to draw down the conflict in Lebanon having dealt numerous critical blows to Hezbollah's ability to launch attacks on Israel and to the group's structure and leadership.

  • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior gov't and military officials on 29 Oct to discuss the prospect of signing up to the US-led ceasefire proposal. Bloomberg: "Israel is considering a deal to end the conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon that would see the militant group’s fighters move away from the Israeli border, after assessing its rocket arsenal has been mostly expended or destroyed." Ultranationalist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said to reporters on 29 Oct that The war in the north will be over by the end of the year,”
  • Hezbollah's stance on any ceasefire is not yet known, making Qassem's comments on the war important in the context of whether there is an 'off ramp' that could see the conflict halted, at least in the short-to-medium term.
