Minister of Justice Says "Technical Agreement" on Judicial Package Reached

HUNGARY

Judit Varga, Hungarian Minister of Justice, said in a Tweet:

  • "Technical agreement on the judicial package. This morning I had a constructive discussion w/ Justice Commissioner @dreynders. Technical negotiations on the judicial commitments have been concluded. We wait for the decision of the College of Commissioners. Go, Hungary!"
  • EURHUF saw a near 0.50% downtick on the headline, and is extending lower at the time of typing.

Local newspaper Nepszava reported the following this morning:

  • A conditional agreement was reached between Brussels and Budapest on the judicial reform package, which is the most important condition for the awarding of catch-up (cohesion) grants to Hungary between 2021-2027, Nepszava learned from several independent EU sources.
  • After the expected final agreement on the judicial reform, approximately EUR13bln in support can be released. The fate of the EUR6.3bln suspended in the rule of law procedure, as well as the EUR5.8bln from the recovery fund, is still uncertain, because the Orban government is in no hurry to take measures to crack down on corruption.
