Minister Vyborny Meets With Anti-Monopoly Watchdog Over Food Prices

CZECHIA
  • Agriculture Minister Marek Vyborny will today meet with head of the Office for the Protection of Competition (UOHS) Petr Mlsna to discuss the former official's recent meeting with representatives of major retail chains and determine if they are resorting to cartel-like practices. The government is trying to pressure retail chains into keeping food prices in check and passing on VAT cuts onto consumers, which would help tackle inflation. However, retailers have been hinting that they were planning to hike prices nonetheless amid the imminent traditional repricing of goods and services at the start of the new year.
  • This comes after the CNB confirmed that annual inflation was 0.2pp higher in November than its forecast, which was "due to a somewhat less pronounced slowdown in the year-on-year growth in administered prices". However, "core inflation slowed slightly more markedly than forecasted". The Bank Board will announce its next rate decision on Thursday, December 21.
  • The Castle exempted presidential adviser Petr Kolar from the need to go through a background check, claiming that he doesn't formally need it. The decision contrasts with the Castle's claims that it has tightened the rules on security clearances.
