Mixed Regional Fed CPI Measures But All Softer Than M/M Core CPI

US DATA

Core CPI accelerated slightly from 0.38% to 0.41% M/M in April with various drivers moving in differing directions. The breadth of overall price pressures eased notably back near pre-pandemic levels though. We compare that backdrop with the following Regional Fed measures:

  • The Cleveland Fed median CPI held steady at 0.40% M/M after prior moderation to the ‘softest’ since Aug’21.
  • The 16% trimmed mean on the other hand accelerated from 0.23% to 0.33% M/M.
  • Separately, the Atlanta Fed’s sticky core CPI ex shelter eased further from 0.26% to 0.21% M/M for its softest since Sep’21.
  • In Y/Y terms, the Cleveland median (7.0%, -0.1pps) remains close to cycle highs but the trimmed (6.1%, -0.1pps) and Atl Fed sticky core ex shelter (4.5%, -0.3pps) continue to make better progress.
