SOUTH AFRICA: MK Lawmaker, Zuma's Daughter Charged Over Deadly 2021 Riots

SOUTH AFRICA

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a deputy for the left-wing populist uMkhonto weSizwe (MK Party) and daughter of party leader Jacob Zuma, has been charged by prosecutors for incitement to commit terrorism over her alleged role in the deadly 2021 riots that followed the imprisonment of her father and resulted in the deaths of 354. The bringing of charges follows her arrest on 29 Jan.

  •  Zuma-Sambudla was not asked to enter a plea in court, with reports indicating she intends to deny guilt. She will appear before the Durban High Court on 20 March. The case could garner significant political interest given the MK's position as the main opposition to President Cyril Ramaphosa's Government of National Unity (GNU).
  • Ahead of today's hearing, the MK Party called on "ground forces” to show up “in numbers” at the courthouse. With the eruption in violence in 2021 that hit the KwaZulu-Natal province following former President Zuma's arrest causing billions of rand in damage and resulting in an estimated 150k job losses, signs of escalating political and social tensions around the case will be closely observed.
