MNI BRIEF: Barr Says SLR Adjustment Considered Under Review
Federal Reserve vice chair for supervision nominee Michael Barr Thursday told lawmakers he would consider adjustments to the supplementary leverage ratio in a broad review of capital and liquidity in markets but refrained from making a commitment to make changes if confirmed.
"What I'd like to do if confirmed as vice chair is to come take a come in and take a look at a capital and liquidity in the system, broadly speaking, to look at the SLR to look at the Basel III so-called end game rules that need to be proposed and to try and take a look at this as a whole rather than piece by piece," said Barr, adding that review would not take years. The Fed in March 2021 said it would make several potential modification to the SLR.
Officials in the Biden administration have been considering reforms that could improve Treasury market functioning under periods of stress. Treasury Under Secretary for Domestic Finance Nellie Liang told MNI adjustments to the SLR would be considered.
