MNI BRIEF: Brussels Working On How To Mesh EDPs/New Rules

(MNI) Brussels

The EU's updated Excessive Deficit Procedures should be announced in the second half of June but officials are no nearer determining their inter-play with new fiscal rules, EU Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said Tuesday.

“We are still working on it and with the member states to find the best approach,” the commissioner said. The new Debt Sustainability Analysis-based trajectories will be announced on June 21.

The issue remains an important one in terms of both timing and policy implications, with some questions over which of the two procedures would be the more binding. If the EDPs - which are expected to be enforced on around 8 countries this year - come before the DSA trajectories, would they override the latter. This remains an issue.
