MNI BRIEF: Canada Firms See Record Wage and Price Gains

Small businesses expect record wage and price gains over the next year, according to a Canadian Federation of Independent Business survey published Thursday, at a time when central bank officials are debating how forcefully to raise interest rates.

Firms are planning 4.7% price increases over the next year, beating the prior record of 4.6% set in December, and that measure has climbed from 2.5% a year ago. Expected wage increases climbed to 3.1% from 2.9% in February, matching a record high reached in November in CFIB data back to 2009.

Wage and price readings exceed the Bank of Canada's 1% to 3% band around its 2% inflation target. Supply chains will remain tight into at least the second half of the year, a top trade economist has told MNI, and BOC deputy said March 25 policymakers are "prepared to act forcefully" if needed to bring inflation back down.
