MNI POLITICAL RISK - GOP Legislative Strategy Comes Into Focus
Daily round-up of news from the US.
Executive summary:
- US President-elect Donald Trump’s Pentagon nominee, Pete Hegseth, is looking increasingly untenable amid scrutiny over personal misconduct. Trump is reportedly considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) as replacement nominees.
- Treasury Secretary nominee, Scott Bessent, will meet lawmakers on Capitol Hill today. He is unlikely to face any major obstacles to confirmation although there will be questions regarding his positions on universal tariffs and Fed independence.
- Trump’s first-term Trade Rep, Robert Lighthizer, appears unlikely to rejoin the administration.
- The final House race was called yesterday evening, with Democrat Adam Gray flipping California’s 13th District. The Republican Party will hold a 220-215 majority in the lower chamber, which will shrink to 217-215 if Rep Elise Stefanik (D-NY) is confirmed as UN Ambassador in January.
- Republican leadership is alighting on a legislative strategy for the first hundred days of the Trump administration. The first item is a Continuing Resolution to avert a government shutdown on December 20. Congress will then follow with two separate partisan reconciliation bills: The first will focus on the border, energy, and national defence. The second bill, which includes more complex tax reforms, will come later in the year.
- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered a message to Trump by calling on European NATO members to boost defence spending.
- Poll of the Day:Trump appears to have fallen short of securing a majority in the presidential election.
