MNI BRIEF: Canada Home Starts Drop 13% To Lowest Since 2020

(MNI) OTTAWA
OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian housing starts dropped 13% in January to the lowest since September 2020, the federal housing agency said Wednesday, after the central bank brought in the biggest rate-hike campaign in decades to quell inflation.

The annualized pace of starts reported by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. fell on the month to 215,365 units, including a 52% drop in Toronto. Government ministers have been warned that higher inflation and interest rates are straining their signature goal of doubling the pace of home construction to ease a supply squeeze.
