MNI BRIEF: Canada Jan Building Permits at Record High on Homes

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canadian building permits rose 8.2% to a record high CAD9.9 billion in January led by housing projects, government figures showed Wednesday, gains the central bank says are badly needed to pull the economy out of the pandemic even if they come with signs of dangerous speculation.

Residential permits rose 11% to CAD 7.1 billion including a 15% jump in single-family homes. Demand for bigger residences in new and resale markets is surging as millions of Canadians are allowed to work from home to follow health rules around Covid-19.

The dollar value of single-family home permits has jumped 51% from a year ago, Statistics Canada figures show, while applications for more commercial space dropped 25%.
