MNI BRIEF: Canada Flash Aug Sales Up, Reversing Sluggish July

Canada July Retail Sales -0.6%, Aug Flash Sales +2.1%

Canadian retail sales rebounded in August with a flash estimate showing a 2.1% rise following a 0.6% decline in July, suggesting some upside lift for Q3 GDP.

Statistics Canada's reports reflected easier Covid restrictions, with the July decline reflecting households curbing purchases at grocers and home improvement stores, likely as they shifted back to restaurant meals, while clothing stores showed strength as they were open more regularly. The July decline was smaller than the 1.2% economists predicted, and sales were 5.3% higher than a year ago.
